Single SEZ of Southern Italy, expansion of the Novartis pharmaceutical plant in Torre Annunziata and construction of a resort in the province of Taranto

13 September 2024

The government's action to enable, with simplified and accelerated procedures, the development of production facilities and the expansion of pre-existing ones in all eight regions of the Single Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Southern Italy continues.

In particular, today the Mission Structure set up by the government signed two single authorization measures concerning, respectively, the expansion of the Novartis pharmaceutical plant in Torre Annunziata (NA) and the construction of a resort in the province of Taranto.

The first project is part of the multinational pharmaceutical company's development plan, which focuses on the strategic role of the Campania plant and envisages investments of 80 million euros by 2025. In detail, the authorized project envisages the development of a new production compartment and a new intensive warehouse, with the aim of increasing the production volumes of new drugs and making their packaging more efficient.

The second project, called “La Maviglia,” is a resort, which will be built in Maruggio (TA) on an area of more than 100 hectares. The investment is a candidate to build one of the most important facilities on the entire world circuit, where international competitions will be possible. The total estimated value of the intervention, which will offer a decisive contribution to the strengthening of the tourist-receptive sector in the Taranto Ionian area, is estimated at more than 200 million euros.

“The Mezzogiorno starts again from here,” said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, ”from the competitiveness of the companies that settle there and create jobs, from the ability to attract strategic investments for Italy and Europe, from the enhancement of its human capital, which translates into quality employment. It is a bet in which I firmly believed when the government established the single SEZ of the Mezzogiorno to affirm a modern vision of economic development centered on the freedom of enterprise: a bet whose first fruits we are seeing today in terms of new productive settlements, employment and technological innovation.”

Minister for European Affairs, the South, Cohesion Policies and the PNRR, Raffaele Fitto, expressed “great satisfaction with the work done: these investments show that the single SEZ is a concrete prospect for the revitalization of the south of Italy”

These projects are joined by others that have benefited from the single authorization. These include, by way of example only: the new production line of innovative ultra-stable films of IRPLAST S.p.a., in Abruzzo, in Atessa (CH), worth 55 million euros; the expansion of the Fontenoce water bottling plant, of SILA s.p.a, in Calabria, in Parenti (CS), worth 16 million, , the settlement for the production, garaging and maintenance of pleasure boats of Maxitender S.R.L, in Sardinia, in Olbia, worth 12 million, the expansion of the settlement for the logistics activity of NEW FDM S.P.A., in Sicily, in Modica (RG), worth 13 million, the temperature-controlled logistics depot for the storage of products from the dairy sector of DI CIERO S.r.l, in Molise, in Campochiaro, (CB), worth 8 million.
