The Single SEZ Dedicated Unit is placed directly under the Minister for European Affairs, the South, cohesion policies and the  NRRP , pursuant to article 9 of the legislative decree of 19 September 2023, n. 124, converted, with amendments, by law 13 November 2023 L. n. 162.

The following tasks and functions are assigned  to the Single SEZ Dedicated Unit:

• ensures, on the basis of the guidelines of the SEZ Steering committee ( established at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, by article 1, paragraph 1, of legislative decree no. 124 of 2023), support to the political authority delegated, in the field of SEZ , to exercise the functions of direction and coordination of the Government strategic action related to the implementation of the strategic plan of the single SEZ;
• supervises the activities of the Technical Secretariat of the SEZ steering committee;
• carries out coordination and implementation tasks of the activities envisaged under the strategic plan of the single SEZ;
• oversees the preliminary activity relating to proposals to update or modify the strategic  plan of the single SEZ;
• defines, in agreement with the relevant authorities , the activities necessary to promote the single SEZ attractiveness for businesses and guarantees the availability and accessibility to the public of relevant information;
• defines, in agreement with the relevant authorities, the activities necessary to prevent infiltration attempts by organized crime;
• carries out preliminary investigations and the  functions of proceeding administration for the purposes of issuing the single authorization referred to in Article 15, without prejudice to the provisions of paragraphs 6 and 7 of the same Article 15;
• Oversees the institutional communication and advertising activities of the single SEZ, through the web portal of the single SEZ referred to in article 12, also employing other Presidency of the Council of Ministers ‘s structures.

The Single SEZ Dedicated Unit, established at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers by art. 10 of the Legislative Decree 124/2023, operates as the proceeding administration for the purpose of issuing the single authorization and  the duties of the extraordinary commissioners referred to in article 4, paragraph 6-bis of the Legislative Decree to it. 91/2017, converted by Law 123/2017 were transferred to it .

The coordinator of the Single SEZ Dedicated Unit is one of the members of the Committee for the Suppression of Fraud against the European Union (COLAF) , in accordance with the provisions of the legislative decree of 2 March 2024, n. 19, coordinated with the conversion law of 29 April 2024, n. 56, containing: «Further urgent provisions for the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)».

The coordinator of the Single SEZ Dedicated Unit is the councilor Antonio Caponetto.
